This is a SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1848 .69 CAL MUZZLE LOADER; this is a percussion cap. This rifle has been cut down to 33″ from its original 43″ — possibly for use as a calvary rifle?) The modification was clearly done a very long time ago.
The eagle crest on the lock plate is very clear. On the tang are the initials R A W. The butt plate has U S stamped forward of the top screw.
There is a hole in the end of the barrel like a sight was once mounted; the stock has a two inch crack above the trigger right side.
