Never Forget, Always Grateful

This year, April 5 is Gold Star Spouses Day. What does it mean if you see a person wearing a Gold Star lapel pin? A tradition began during World War I, when a Blue Star banner hung in the windows of homes with a family member serving in the military. If that family member died during that service, the blue star was covered with a gold star.

A Gold Star lapel pin with a purple background, approved by Congress in 1947, is presented to the spouse of the member who lost their life in combat. A Next-of-Kin Gold Star button featuring a gold star on a gold background may be given to other family members.

The first Monday in September became a legal holiday seven years later when Congress passed an act recognizing the day and America’s workers. Learn more about the history of Labor Day!

The Purple Heart

George Washington created the Badge of Military Merit (the forerunner of the Purple Heart Award) on August 7, 1782, while he was a General in the Revolutionary War. He only awarded three of them.

Now the Purple Heart honors nearly 2 million who have been injured or killed while serving in the military for our country.

We thank them and their families.

If you find a Purple Heart, here’s what you can do.
